Phnom Penh part 2

A pagoda built for the display of some of the skulls found in the killing fields
Here! Touch it!

See the bullet holes?

A bone shaft.

The killing fields was a Chinese graveyard before the khmer rouge turned it a mass burial place.

Clothes from the victims, left on the ground (or at least so they said).

A beautiful and peaceful place, with almost filled up and overgrown holes in the ground as a reminder of what it really is.

Our guide explained that the khmer rouge sometimes used the sharp and rough stems of palm leaves to tear the throats of their victims.

It was over 30 degrees heat outside, the sun was shining and I still had goose-bumps from feeling cold.

Russian Market in Phnom Penh. Didn't see a single Russian thing tho.

Lilla and Sanna looking at stuff. There was a lot of stuff there. Stuff here, stuff everywhere, and little people popping out from nowhere trying to sell it to you. Special price for you, of course.
Market food court. I had a tasty fish soup!

In Cambodia it is OK to take a nap at work. Even if you are taking it right in the middle of your meat stall in the market!

Lilla made a painting at a restaurant and made a waiter put it up in on the only empty spot on the wall she could find.

People dancing in the street at the riverside in central Phnom Penh. OK so it is a pretty crap picture, but five or so different "teams" were dancing/practising what can only be described as a crossover between line-dance and traditional Cambodian dance. Looked like a lot of fun!

Battambang!

An anti alcoholism ad on a tree next to a gathering place by the river...

... sponsored by IOGT-NTO.  The chaps we saw sitting next to the three later that night didn't seem to be very interested in the message.

Bun, our guide and tuk tuk driver, stopped by a restaurant with a turquoise sign outside of it. Apparently this sign meant that the restaurant serves "special foods". In this particular case; dog meat.

Bamboo train! Check out http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/5110236.stm to learn more.

Sitting on a flat platform made of bamboo, sizzling through green jungle and greener rice fields, with the constant sound of the engine and the clipperty-clop of the crooked railway ringing in your ears, this was an amazing ride.

Since there is only one railway but traffic that goes in both directions, whenever you get an encounter one of the bamboo rides has to get disaggregated and lifted aside.

Yes, the whole thing would have felt very touristy, if it wasnt for the fact that every now and then the train stopped to pick up a local, or be handed a package to give to someone further up or down the railway.

The Golden Gate of Battambang. Or sumfin.

At first I thought they were big lime fruits, but Bun showed us that they are really oranges! Delicious ones too!

A tree full of big bats. Ehm, unfortunately not very photogenic bats.

More stairs! 358 to be exact, to get to  Prasat Banan, the wat said to be the inspiration for Angkor Wat.

Almost there Em!

View from the top. Preeeetty OK.

Prasat Banan means "Temple of Prayer". 400 meters up in the air surrounded by jungle it was very peaceful and calm.

Children trying to make us wave back at them.
An artist redecorating a temple that the Khmer Rouge painted white during their occupation.

An explicit picture outside the killing caves, where approximately 10,000 people were killed.

People were either killed and thrown into the caves, or thrown alive and smashed against the rocks.

View from the top of the mountain of the killing caves and the temple. To the left is the Thai border.

Bun explained that in Cambodia, a man has to give 5,000 USD to the family of the girl he wants to marry. Whether there is s a girl waiting for him to come up with the money or not we never found out, but his tuk tuk said "NO MONEY NO HONEY". He also said he thought about getting another sign saying "NO HONEY SAVE MONEY"...

In case you've got you ways around Battambang.
Restaurant Smokin Pot. No strange things.
Look Rhys, Vegemite!

Happiest girl we met, most delicious food stall soup I ever had!
